Outgoing Minister Yesilgöz (Justice and Security) was chosen by Bits of Freedom as the “biggest violator” of citizens’ privacy and freedom. According to the organizer of the annual Big Brother Awards, Yesilgöz leaves people who are unjustly on the terrorist list to their fate.

The minister received the highest number of online votes among the four candidates. The “professional jury award” goes to social media companies Meta, X and Telegram, nominated as a group. According to experts, these platforms do too little to counter calls for violence or genocide.

It is the eighteenth presentation of the Big Brother Awards, in Amsterdam. Ministers or authorities have also received the public award in previous editions. In addition to Yesilgöz, the Royal Military Police and State Secretary Van Rij (Tax and Tax Authority) were also appointed.

“Failed policy”

According to the organizer Bits of Freedom, at least eighty people in the Netherlands are wrongly included on the international terrorism list. Yeslilgöz acknowledged the problem, but stressed that people must act on their own to be removed from the list.

Bits of Freedom is about failed policies. Yesilgöz is invited to apologize and resolve the problem as quickly as possible. “What really isn’t possible: complete radio silence and shifting responsibility to the victims.”

“Not always preventable”

People are identified carefully and according to the rules, the Justice Ministry said in a response. However, “it is not always possible to prevent the identification of people for irreducible reasons. This is obviously extremely annoying for the person involved.”

According to the Ministry, the Netherlands can only intervene to a limited extent if a country takes measures against someone identified as suspicious. To help victims, we are working on an overview of how an objection can be filed for each agency.

War in Gaza

Meta, X and Telegram are criticized for their actions related to the war in Gaza. Companies are said to be doing too little to moderate the inflammatory content. “Calls to violence or even genocide are easily possible, remain available for a long time and go virtually unpunished.”

But according to Bits for Freedom, highly influential companies cause some groups to become invisible. “In doing so, they deprive this group of an important means of protection against the violence by which they are removed from their country and killed.”
