Minister of Law and Human Rights hopes that the handling of the Vina case by the police will not be like Sengkon and Karta

JAKARTA – Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H Laoly highlighted cases of alleged rape and murder of Vina Dewi Arsita and Rizky Rudiana or Eky in 2016. Yasonna also completely handed over the handling of the case to the police.

“Yes, we will hand it over to the police to completely uncover it, so that there is no suspicion from the public. Moreover, there are further indications that the person who was arrested was not the person who did it, there was an error in the SOP during the investigation,” said Yasonna when met at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta, Wednesday. (12/6/2024).

Not only Vina’s case, Yasonna hopes that similar criminal cases can also be handled well by the police. Yasonna hopes that the handling of cases by the police will not be like in the Sengkon and Karta cases.

Sengkon and Karta are two farmers who were found guilty of the crime of robbery and murder of the couple Sulaiman and Siti Haya in November 1974. Sengkon was sentenced to 12 years and Karta to 7 years. However, after 3 years of the verdict, the perpetrator of the murder of Sulaiman and Siti Haya admitted his actions.

“So this is something that has happened in other countries too, there was a case where the person who was sentenced to death was sentenced to death, but in the end he was acquitted, he wasn’t the murderer. Its hapens,” said Yasonna.

“And in situations like this the police have to really work hard, quickly uncover this case so that there are no wild hypotheses that will cause suspicions to arise in the community,” he said.
