Millions of Muslims in Nigeria celebrate Eid quietly – 2024-06-19 13:08:03

At least 100 million Muslims live in Nigeria. Eid-ul-Azha, the main religious festival of Muslims, is celebrated in the country every year with great enthusiasm. But due to the severe economic crisis, thousands of people in Nigeria are unable to sacrifice animals. On Sunday (June 16) Nigerians are celebrating a largely silent Eid. British media reported the news.

The crisis has become bigger than the festival in the country this time. 78-year-old Malan Kabiru Tudun said, I have been sacrificing goats every year since 1976, only this time I could not.

Most of the people in the country are not sacrificing animals due to the cost of living. Or can’t.

Konoma, the largest city in northern Nigeria, has a large Muslim population. Wada, a resident of this city, said that there was never a difficult situation like this time.

Nigeria is currently going through the biggest economic crisis. As a result, unrest and anger are increasing in the country. Due to inflation, the price of daily necessities in the country has now increased by an average of 30 percent. This rate of inflation is the highest in the last few years. Food prices have increased the most in the country.

Shamsu Mohammad, a 54-year-old citizen of the country, said that if someone gave him money to buy animals, he would rather buy cheap food and store it at home.

He said that sacrifice is not compulsory in Islam. It is only for those who can afford it. There is no need to sacrifice those who cannot afford it.

Ibrahim Balrabe earns his living by selling Wambai sheep. He said, I sold 15 sheep last year. But this year I was able to sell only seven sheep.

In the Eid prayers held in the country, millions of Muslims have prayed to God that the country and themselves will not have an economic crisis in the next year.
