The Argentine president, the ultraliberal Javier Milei, urged his Mercosur partners on Thursday to promote a greater commercial opening of the block and warned that his government will advance in that direction unilaterally if necessary, during the group’s summit this Thursday in Buenos Aires.
“We will undertake the path of freedom and we will do it accompanied or alone because Argentina cannot wait,” Milei said before the summit in which he will cross the Pro Tepore presidency of the block to Brazil.
The Argentine government has expressed several times its desire to advance with a free trade agreement with the United States, for which it sees Mercosur as an obstacle.
“We need more trade, more economic activity, more investment and more work urgently and that is why we also need more freedom,” argued the Argentine president.
Milei advocated that during the next presidency of the block, which also integrates Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, Brasilia leads a process in that regard.
“But if this were not possible and the block members preferred to resist, persist on a path that has not resulted in, then we will have to insist on making the conditions of the society that unite us more flexible,” Milei warned.
Uruguay has also insisted for decades in a flexibility of the rules of the block, which prevent agreements with third countries without the consent of all partners.
The previous Uruguayan government, headed by the center -right Luis Lacalle Pou, looked for a FTA with China, despite the reticence of Brazil and Paraguay in particular, and the Argentine of the Peronist Alberto Fernández in his last times before giving power to Milei. Fuente: AFP
