Milei dissolves the Ministry of Women of Argentina

The government of Argentina announced the closure of the former Ministry of Women, the department in charge of protection against gender violence in the previous Administration, headed by the Peronist Alberto Fernandez (2019-2023), according to an official announcement from the Ministry of Justice. .

“In line with the mandate of President Javier Milei to reduce the size of the State and eliminate politicized organizations, in December 2023 – the date on which the new authorities took office – the National Government ordered that the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversities “It would be transformed into an Undersecretariat while its closure was completed,” it was reported in an official statement.

This dependency passed into the orbit of the Ministry of Justice and today its definitive elimination was resolved, the note adds.

According to the Milei government, the now defunct Ministry of Women “was created and used by the previous administration for political-partisan purposes, to propagate and impose an ideological agenda, hire militants, and organize talks and events.”

“None of their actions resulted in a reduction in the crime rate,” in reference to the number of femicides recorded in the country, an average of 245 per year. “On the contrary, the Argentine people witnessed their ideological bias in the discriminatory defense of the victims,” added the Ministry of Justice.

The Milei administration claims to have detected in an internal audit that “in the area of the Undersecretary of Gender there was a clear overlap of functions with different government agencies that are dedicated to the same task.”

“This implied over-maintenance of buildings, structures and more than eight hundred employees, with different salaries, money that the Argentine State does not have enough,” stressed the Department of Justice.

The ultra-liberal Milei government emphasized the need for its decision by stating: “This decision responds to our commitment to the transformation, efficiency and reduction of the State, always continuing with the defense and protection of citizens against violence.”

The closure of the Undersecretariat for Protection against Gender Violence had already been anticipated this Thursday by the head of that department, Claudia Barcia, who today presented her resignation from the position.

Barcia had said that Milei’s Executive had planned to dissolve this area of the government of Argentina, a country in which, on average, a woman dies every 35 hours due to sexist violence. Source: news
