MIDIRAMA: After the Olympics, the planet’s problems are back

The torments of Jirama subscribers dominated the news this week. Power cuts and water outages are commonplace almost everywhere on the Big Island, but today, we are talking more specifically about what happened in the capital. What the people of Tananarivo have endured has revealed the seriousness of the situation in which the state company finds itself. Since Monday, users have been subjected to power and water outages that have never reached such a scale. The reactions of exasperation have never been so violent. They have remained verbal for the moment, but they have alerted the authorities and prompted the general manager of Jirama to try to calm this legitimate anger of consumers. His explanations hold water and the reasons they give, particularly climatic causes, cannot be doubted, but citizens are asking him to find solutions to reduce the inconvenience they are enduring. The use of artificial rain to raise the water level is one of them and he says that it should start this weekend. As the saying goes, “time will tell”. The wait for the appointment of the members of the new government should not be long because the President of the Republic has stated that he is in the process of evaluating the work of the old team. He even specified that this could take place at the end of the week. The Malagasy, for their part, have welcomed the news without showing the slightest surprise. They accept the timetable set by the Head of State who is, as they say, the master of the clocks, but what matters to them is the efficiency of the new ministers. They remain, however, circumspect about the way in which the country’s development policy is being conducted.

Internationally, the news has focused on several hot spots on the planet. The Russo-Ukrainian war has seen new twists, peace in the Middle East cannot yet be envisaged for the moment, the presidential election in Venezuela may already be decided.

The Ukrainian army’s incursion into southern Russia in the Kursk region took the Russian general staff by surprise. The operation was apparently meticulously prepared and allowed the forces involved to conquer a portion of Russian territory estimated at more than a thousand km2. The Ukrainians claim that 80 villages came under their control while the Russians speak of only 28 localities. The latter describe this operation as an act of terrorism. President Volodymyr Zelinsky said that his country had, on this occasion, achieved “its strategic objective”. He explained that he wanted to bring the Russians to the negotiating table.

Talks on a possible truce in Gaza began the day before yesterday in Doha, in the presence of the CIA director and the heads of Israeli intelligence services, but without Hamas. The spokesman for the US National Security Council said that much work remains to be done to remove obstacles. The Palestinian organization sticks to the plan proposed by Joe Biden and hopes that the Israeli side will be convinced of its correctness.

In Venezuela, the opposition is asking Nicolas Maduro to “respect the will of the people and accept the victory of his opponent.” The latter absolutely refuses any consultation with the man he considers a troublemaker. He has hardened his attitude and had the army repress all the demonstrations that take place almost daily.

The world, after the 2024 Paris Olympics, has returned to its usual problems. Its conflicts are still the same and they only ask to decrease in intensity. The Middle East, Russia and Ukraine remain the most sensitive regions of the planet. Diplomacy is at work to contain the warlike impulses of some and others.
