Midagri plans to recover and enhance the platform system

This project will benefit more than 120,000 families living in the highlands of the Andes.

Angel Manero, Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, established a technical table that brings together experts and specialists from different areas, under the name of «Interdisciplinary dialogue: proposal for the Restoration and Revaluation of the Platform System project in the Productive Cultural Landscapes of Peru.

This discussion meeting marks the beginning of a process aimed at promoting the agricultural development and other activities such as culture and turismothrough the implementation of projects that highlight the importance of the Peruvian platforms, a valuable ancient heritage.

In his speech, the head of Midagri highlighted the importance of revitalize, revalue and implement innovative technologies in terraced production systems in 11 departments. This aims to benefit more than 120,000 families and encompass 4,650 hectares of crop fieldswith an investment of 138,000 soles.

“The impact will be tremendous. Just the size of the agricultural area that will be enabled is like more than 3 Majes projects. Additionally, cultural landscapes will be revalued; efficient use of water, soil and microclimates will be made, which allow the development of important biodiversity. Added to this is the connection it can have with gastronomy and tourism”, he stated.

In another part of his speech, the minister pointed out that, although there are pending procedures such as carrying out studies for the project, it is crucial to guarantee rapid progress. «We want to ensure that by the end of the Government, the project is fully implemented; we would like to demonstrate tangible results of the rehabilitation work«he added.

The event took place in the Mochica Room of the culture Ministry and had the participation of the Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteagaas well as with the assistance of national and international experts, researchers and state officials who are involved in the technology of constructing complex platform systems and large-scale irrigation infrastructure.

In order to achieve the objectives of the «Platform Restoration and Revaluation Project in Peru (R&RA)«, the following components are planned to be implemented: improvement in the recharge and consolidation of water in the basins to guarantee its storage and availability for agriculturerestoration of terrace systems and adoption of technical irrigation systems, integration with the market and promotion of the appreciation of water culture and crops on agricultural terraces.
