Microsoft dictates what everyone hopes Apple will do

“AI PCs,” aka Windows machines (which likely require the machine to have hardware-based AI), must have at least 16GB of RAM. Microsoft has decided it.

New Surface only with 16 GB of RAM at least?

In other words, Windows flagship models from now on will never have 8 GB of RAM, something that Apple is constantly criticized for: the MacBook Pro 14, which costs NOK 23,990, only has 8 GB of RAM, which drew strong criticism of Tim Cook’s company, which traditionally sets were low on RAM across all products.

Oddly enough, it was TrendForce, an analytics agency, and not Microsoft, that announced the happy news everyone was hoping for: “Microsoft has set the baseline for DRAM and PC AI at 16GB. Over the long term, TrendForce estimates that AI-powered PCs will catalyze and increase demand for PC DRAM bits each year, with consumer trends further increasing this demand.” We hope and believe that the new Surface computers, which will be launched in the spring, will all start with 16GB of RAM. It is also optional whether and where to place the Copilot key.

Another requirement for AI PCs is 40 TOPS with NPU power. Both Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, AMD Strix Point, and Intel’s Lunar Lake chips have so much AI power to offer.

The difference between 8GB and 16GB of RAM is huge
