Mickey Mouse will have two horror movies after the release of copyright

Mickey Mouse will be the star of several horror audiovisual productions now that his first version (1928) has become public domain in the United States.

According to the specialized media Variety, filmmaker Steven Lamorte will direct a horror comedy based on ‘Steamboat Willie’, the short film in which the Disney mouse made his first appearance in 1928.

Production on Lamorte’s film will begin in the spring and will follow a sadistic mouse who torments a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers.

Hero

Mickey will also be the protagonist of another slasher horror film titled ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’, about a murderer who uses the mask of the popular mouse to terrorize a group of teenage friends.

The actor and writer of the film, Simon Phillips, published the first preview of the film on YouTube on January 1.

The story is about Alex’s 21st birthday, who is visited by his friends while he works the night shift at an arcade and who will have to survive the game that the masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play with them.

The film was shot, edited and directed by Jamie Bailey and written by Phillips and stars James Laurin, Nick Biskupek, Mireille Gagné and Damir Kovic, among others.

Not only film productions

But the use of Mickey Mouse in a terrifying aspect will not be limited to film productions.

The mouse was already the source of inspiration for a video game in ‘Steamboat Willie’ called ‘Infestation 88’ that shows a transfigured Mickey Mouse and which, according to the January 1 preview, is about rat exterminators.
