Mexico struggles to overcome Jamaica, Gerardo Arteaga becomes a hero

TEXAS – The Mexican National Team (Timnas) narrowly won 1-0 over Jamaica on the first matchday of Group B of the 2024 Copa America at NRG Stadium, Texas, United States, Sunday (23/6/2024) morning.

The Course of the Match
Both teams immediately stepped on the gas from the first minute by trading attacks. Both Mexico and Jamaica succeeded in creating opportunities even though neither resulted in a goal.

The attacks launched by Mexico and Jamaica were still too innocent. But the Reggae Boyz – the nickname of the Jamaican National Team – got the best chance in the 36th minute through Michail Antonio’s hard kick which Jahmali Waite was able to parry.

Meanwhile, Mexico is not without threats. The team nicknamed El Tri created an opportunity through Cesar Montes’ long-range shot in the 41st minute which still went up.

Then Mexico threatened Jamaica’s goal again in the 44th minute through Luis Romo’s kick. Until the whistle sounded to signal the end of the first half there were still no goals. The two teams played a goalless draw in the first half.

Second round
After the break, the Reggae Boyz managed to break into Mexico’s goal with Michail Antonio’s header in the 50th minute. But after reviewing it via VAR, the referee disallowed the goal because the West Ham United player was in an offside position.

El Tri got a chance through Luis Chavez’s hard kick in the 56th minute which was saved. Mexico continued to launch attacks after attacks on the Jamaican defense line.

Until finally, Mexico succeeded in opening the scoring in the 69th minute through Gerardo Arteaga’s kick. Jamaica also tried to respond to the goal. However, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s polished team still found it quite difficult to penetrate El Tri’s defense.
Entering the final five minutes of the match, both teams were still playing fiercely. However, no additional goals were scored. As a result, Mexico achieved a narrow 1-0 victory over Jamaica.
