The Mexican authorities presented this Thursday a complaint against the Government of Ecuador before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the recent police assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito.

Former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, implicated in an alleged corruption case, was staying in this embassy.

“Under the protection of the legal system and using the law, we have decided to hold Ecuador accountable for the flagrant violation of the inviolability of the Embassyagainst the physical and moral integrity of our diplomats,” reported the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena, said that, in her complaint, the Mexican authorities demand that the United Nations suspend Ecuador as a member of the organization until a formal apology is offered for an incident that has been blamed on international level.

According to President López Obrador, this request has the objective of setting a precedent for violations of the national sovereignty of a United Nations member state, and also for possible future cases similar to what occurred at the Mexican Embassy.

“What is sought is that a despicable event like that suffered by Mexico and especially its diplomatic representation is not repeated, that it is not repeated in any country. That international law be guaranteed, that the premises, the embassies of countries in any nation, are not violated,” added the Mexican leader.
