Mexicans invest a significant amount of time and money in dating apps, so they are willing to use new technologies such as artificial intelligence to help them increase their chances of finding a partner.
The Norton 2024 Cybersecurity Report: Online Dating found that the average user in Mexico spends six hours a week and an average of 1,532 Mexican pesos throughout their life on dating apps and services.
The study also found that online dating users in Mexico consider Instagram, Tinder and Facebook to be the safest dating apps.
In addition, more than seven out of ten Mexicans surveyed have used an online dating app while traveling or on vacation.
As for the use of new technologies, 66% of these Mexican users are interested in using artificial intelligence to write pick-up lines and start conversations.
While 61% would use this technology to develop their dating app profile and 54% to improve their photos.
“Online dating is notoriously difficult to navigate and using AI as a dating coach seems like a no-brainer when you’re receiving a bad pick-up line or trying to craft a thoughtful break-up text,” said Leyla Bilge, director of Norton’s scam research lab.
However, he warned that this technology can also be used maliciously when it comes to the online dating market. This is evidenced by the fact that Norton has seen a 72% increase in online dating scams since 2023.
This is reflected in the fact that four out of ten Mexicans who have used one of these apps have been the target of a dating scam, while more than a third have been victims of catfishing, i.e. identity theft.
