Former FBI Deputy Director Chris Swecker. (SPECIAL)
Former FBI Deputy Director Chris Swecker weighed in on the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez near El Paso, Texas.
Swecker, who was part of the Criminal Investigation Division, said that when a high-level arrest like this is made, “things tend to get violent, even more violent than normal, and violence is the norm in Mexico.”
He expressed surprise at the developments within the Sinaloa Cartel. He added that cartels tend to betray each other “that happens all the time” and infiltrate to harm each other.
He pronounced that The Mexican government is “complicit” with the cartels“There is no doubt about it.”
Pointing to his experience on the U.S.-Mexico border and in Florida, “they can compromise the Mexican government and establish the routes without interference from the federal government, from municipal governments up to the top. It’s not a question of whether they help the cartels, they are part of them.”
He nodded when asked if there would be months of tension following the capture of “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López.
Swecker added that the Canada-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has enabled cartels to become more powerful and move drugs across the border “very easily,” also criticizing the Biden administration’s “open borders” policy, which has allowed them to become the “most powerful criminal organizations in the world.”
