Metropolitano: “Put a stop to harassment” reaches 20 stations

A legal assistance and emotional support service has been established with the collaboration of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations

Marybel Vidalpresident of the Urban Transportation Authority (ATU)reported that the campaign ‘Stop bullying‘of the Metropolitano has expanded its coverage to the station Central in Cercado de Limathus reaching a total of 20 stations.

Additionally, in this location a legal assistance and emotional support service has been established with the collaboration of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP).

This initiative, which began last April 18, began at the station Matellini in Chorrillos and has been gradually implemented in the following stations: Rosario de Villa, Terán, Escuela Militar, Estadio Unión, Bulevar, Balta, Plaza de Flores, 28 de Julio, Benavides, Ricardo Palma, Angamos, Domingo Orué, Aramburú, Canaval and Moreyra, Andrés Reyes, Javier Prado, Canada, Mexico, National and Central Stadium.

The initiative led by the ATU, an entity dependent on the Ministry of Transport and Communicationshas as purpose foster safe environments on buses and stations of the transportation system Metropolitan. Currently, the plan is focused on providing support to witnesses and victims of sexual harassment in said system.

The plan to reduce this type of crime includes the presence of police officers from the National Police of Peru (PNP) at stations, strengthening the ATU anti-harassment brigade, placing undercover staff on busesthe installation of care modules, queues for vulnerable peoplethe dissemination of audio messages in stations and buses, as well as the signage of spaces with graphic material, among other strategies.

Vidal highlighted the importance of victims and witnesses report incidents, and stressed that it is essential that the competent authorities act to ensure that they receive the necessary attention. Furthermore, he mentioned that the campaign has received a 75% support from userswhich motivates us to continue improving the transportation service with determination.

Since the experimental phase began, analyzes were carried out at the stations Matellini, Plaza Flores and Angamoswhich indicated a reduction of the incidence of sexual harassment in the Metropolitan, passing from 21% to 15%.

Another favorable result was the increment in the feeling of security of users, which rose from 34% al 50%along with an increase in reports of sexual harassment by victims or witnesses of the incident.
