Meta launches an artificial intelligence program for European startups in France

Meta today announced the launch of a new open-source artificial intelligence program in France for European startups, which are struggling to maintain their competitiveness, according to the American giant.

“We are facing a real problem in Europe, as the United States and China are rapidly overtaking us,” said Nick Clegg, head of international affairs at Meta.

He continued, “For a very long time, we believed that the only role that Europe had to play was regulation, while China’s role was limited to imitation and the United States was to innovate.”

He added, “We do not achieve success thanks to laws, but rather thanks to innovation, entrepreneurship, and partnerships between technology giants and small startup companies, which is consistent with the ambitions of this program.”

The new program was launched in partnership with Skyway, a subsidiary of Elled, which is dedicated to providing cloud computing services, and the French company Hagging Face, which constitutes a collaborative platform for artificial intelligence models. It will be used by 5 European startups between September 2024 and February 2025.

A statement indicated that the companies will benefit from “technical guidance provided by researchers at FAIR, a laboratory affiliated with Meta that specializes in research related to artificial intelligence, and will have access to the Hagging Face platform and tools, in addition to the computing power of Skyway.”

The company led a similar program in January. The company, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, supports the “open source” approach.

(Free access to programming code) in Silicon Valley, unlike its competitors such as Open AI.

“The more open a company is about technology, the easier it is for everyone to identify errors and correct them,” Clegg said.
