Argentine footballer Leonel Messi reached the milestone of 200 million followers on Instagram last weekend, a feat that, instead of being celebrated, was marked by encouragement given by Messi to his fans.
Without celebrating his achievement, as a point of reference, the footballer asked his followers to be the change in the fight against online abuse, on a weekend in which many clubs kept their social media accounts closed as a form of protest.
Messi reached a restricted range of stars who surpassed this mark, a sense that among athletes, only Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo accumulate such numbers.
This mark was also reached in the week in which the pair of boots used by Messi to break Pelé’s record for most goals for a club were auctioned for 144 thousand Euros, which went to a hospital in Catalonia.
