Don’t be surprised if a twentysomething doesn’t return your call. Members of the AZ generation do not like to answer the phone. They also explained why.
If you are one of those people who are annoyed by the beeping messages on your mobile phone and prefer to call your friends with whom you can chat for hours, then you are probably not the Generation Z you are a member. Maybe that’s why it might be surprising to you if you can’t reach a twenty-year-old by phone, even if you know for sure that he has a cell phone in his hand, and from the teenager, you will be happy if you receive an emoticon in a reply message. However, it does not hurt to get used to this communication change, because the latest surveys show that telephone conversations are starting to go out of fashion. At least among Generation Z (those born between 1995-2009, i.e. currently 15-29 years old) for sure.
They came to a surprising result by examining the telephone habits of generation Z
According to a recent poll, living in the United Kingdom A quarter of Generation Z youth never pick up their phone – not even if one of their friends or family members is looking for them. They simply ignore it when their cell phone rings and text their friends instead of calling them back.

Almost 70% of those surveyed said that they prefer to text or communicate via chat rather than calling, while 48% prefer to stay in touch via social media. 37% of the respondents are willing to speak, but only for one voice message.
This is why members of Generation Z do not pick up the phone
Interestingly, a significant number of respondents do not answer the phone because they feel that they cannot prepare in advance for an unexpected call. The call may come from an acquaintance, but they are not aware of the subject or the caller’s intentions, so they fear that they will not be able to respond properly. However, in case of an exchange of messages, there is time to think over the answers, and process information, so they prefer it.
Others fear that they might receive bad news or be held accountable, so they are only willing to respond to pre-arranged phone calls. And a significant part of the respondents mostly ignore calls from unknown numbers: they are the first to do so I want to know who is on the other end of the line. They prefer if the person introduces himself via SMS and describes the reason for calling.
A significant number of teenagers are only willing to communicate via text messages
While people in their late twenties are better able to handle unexpected phone calls, among the youngest members of Generation Z there are many teenagers who do not answer the phone under any circumstances. OK often they don’t even respond to their parents’ calls. “My mobile phone is always on silent, and the vibration is turned off, I have never answered a phone call in my life,” testified an 18-year-old in relation to the topic.
The fast-paced lifestyle also took away from the popularity of telephone conversations, as a significant part of the respondents stated that they do not answer calls because too busy and they just don’t fit into their day to chat on the phone.
All these factors highlight why young people in Britain only spend an average of 5 and a half minutes a day on mobile calls, while members of older generations can talk for hours on the phone.
Although this trend will probably not change, and communication between people will increasingly move to the online space, according to experts, this is not necessarily a good direction. Telephone conversations and personal meetings are very important in maintaining and strengthening human relationships.

Although it would be easier to communicate on the phone
When we send a text or voice message, we are participating in so-called asynchronous communication, so we are not “talking” with the other party in real time, so practically a real, spontaneous dialogue does not take place. The argument in favor of the generation is that writing messages gives us the opportunity to think and compose our response, however, our words may not be consistent with the other party’s sentences. It can also happen that we overthink what has been written, and it can cause anxiety if we do not receive an answer from the other party within a certain time.
During an exchange of messages, it is also very difficult to recognize the emotional charge behind the words. When we talk on the phone, we can easily judge the mood and emotional state of the other party from the other party’s intonation, tone of voice and spontaneous reactions. We can hear in his voice when he is offended or angry, just as we can easily recognize when he is teasing or joking. However, written communication is easily misunderstood, we can talk next to each other, and since it does not happen at a specific time, we cannot know under what circumstances and in what situation the other party is reading our message. Although at first it may seem easier to exchange messages than in a live conversation, due to the lack of immediate reactions, it is not at all easy to communicate well in this way.
