Around 30 exhibitors will meet at the eighth version of Nütram, an international event that brings together exponents of oral storytelling, and which will take place on September 13 and 14. The event will offer workshops, storytelling sessions and the analysis of this discipline, from different points of view, through the eyes of the invited artists.
“With the Nütram meeting, we convey the message of the importance of exchanging knowledge and experiences, valuing how good it is for all storytellers to sit down, talk and listen to each other. The presentations are the starting point for dialogue and critical exploration that motivates new reflections, whether in the field of creation, research, the training of new artists or the application of this art in other disciplines,” says Carolina Díaz, president of the Círculo de Narradores Orales de Chile (CinoCh), the professional association in charge of organizing the activity.
Since its creation in 2015, those responsible have set out to contribute to the development of oral storytelling, generating spaces for discussion and strengthening critical capacity in the community. Maintaining this space over the years has allowed them to become a reference for storytellers at a national and international level.
“This is a theoretical forum that has investigated and delved into the different ways in which oral storytelling has been developed in Chile: in the field of heritage, in the field of education and mediation, and in the field of the stage, reflecting on the aesthetic diversity of this stage discipline and how it has positioned itself over the last three decades,” explains Andrea Gaete, secretary of CinoCh and current representative of oral storytelling in the National Council of Performing Arts of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.
This year’s focus is to position the event from its scenic dimension, which is why “we have tried to hold the event in an emblematic scenic space of the capital, which is the Matucana 100 Cultural Center,” says César Muñoz, a member of the organizing committee.

For Carlos Basualto, a storyteller from the Valparaíso Region, this meeting is “a wonderful opportunity to talk with other colleagues about topics that concern us professionally. It is rare that we have an opportunity like this, where we can share experiences related to the profession of storytelling, and for that reason, I hope to learn many new things at this event.” Basualto will be speaking on Saturday 14 about the adaptation of classic works for storytelling.
For Claudia Urbina, partner and regional director of the southern sector of CinoCh, who will present the paper “Experiences with kamishibai”, one of the fundamental things that differentiates oral storytelling is, precisely, its openness to dialogue, conversation and listening, which allows it to advance quickly and continue to expand.
“However, it has achieved many important achievements and that happens from my point of view, because CinoCh is a very committed and truly generous organization that cares about creating warm and safe spaces to learn, debate, share, question, look at, review, etc.”, he explains.
Regarding the need to generate more meetings like this at a national level, Urbina points out that “our presentations are increasingly attended by audiences of all ages, demystifying the idea that stories are only for children, showing that listening to stories, tales and anecdotes connects us with collective oral memory, with traditional oral literature, that is, with the ancestral and, at the same time, it is a connection with the contemporary.”
He acknowledges that it is very necessary to organize more similar meetings both in the south and in the north of the country, so that “other people know this art, its history, its meaning, but also its ethics.”
This eighth version of Nütram will be sealed in a book, which will serve as a valuable resource for the community and a lasting testimony to the advances of this discipline, according to the organization.
