More than anything, these cases testify to what people are capable of even driving on the road and calmly risking the health of everyone around them. The fact that they are not ashamed to take it with them to the service center is ultimately a good thing, but sometimes it is really bitterly funny.
Cars don’t just interest me theoretically, I often get my hands dirty, so to speak. But what sometimes comes under them, you can only shake your head. Especially in the engine compartment I have already found, for example, the classic garden hoses, which replaced the original ones. Instead of caps, PET bottle caps appeared, someone replaced the suction filter with nylon, and so I could continue slowly forever. In fact, these are even better cases where the owners have at least tried to solve the problem constructively.
And the worst ones? For these I refer you to the attached video which appeared at the end of the year on a YouTube channel associated with the Just Rolled Into the Shop Reddit group. On it, mechanics from workshops around the world exchange more or less unusual work experiences, some of which are truly bizarre. And the video visually documents the “best” they’ve encountered over the past twelve months.
Typically these are real atrocities, so we won’t be surprised if some footage literally freezes you, especially when you realize that these cases are not just a distant curiosity. After all, I witnessed how a person came for a tire change when the summer tires had threads sticking out and were dirty with brake fluid. He had winter tires fitted and continued without repairing the brakes.
Even the fact that he had a child in the back seat didn’t stop the person in question, obviously without the right seat. Respect for other motorists is therefore completely alien to him, which makes it even sadder. Any of us can become a victim of these gamblers, all it takes is for something to go wrong at the wrong time and in the wrong place, something that had to go wrong sooner or later as far as how to “fix” it.
But let’s go back to the video, which is not only sad, but often makes you smile. For example, when the customer complains about management’s resistance. However, the reason is not a defect caused by the manufacturer, but his own stupidity and incompetence, as he managed to trap the cable in the steering column. Another then decided to replace his engine oil with vegetable oil, presumably because he didn’t have another on hand. Whatever the reason, an absolutely disgusting substance has formed in the engine that lubricates, but certainly not the necessary components of the drive unit.
Some try to excuse this mistake by saying that to some, oil is just oil and confusion can occur. Well, so be it, but that’s why one is called a motor and the other a vegetable for cooking. The name itself therefore defines the given use. And if someone tries to circumvent the problem, he will logically pay the consequences. Fortunately, this is precisely the case where you only damage yourself or your car, not others.
But obviously the opposite also happens and in the end we publish this report: if it makes at least some people think about what they do with their car, many tragedies can be avoided. As in other cases, if you don’t understand something, don’t do it. We’re car fanatics and have been playing with technology for decades, yet we have no problem understanding that for some it’s a Spanish village. But just as we have no ambition to invent a cure for cancer, people who aren’t passionate about automotive technology should also try to solve problems whose causes they have no idea.
