Mayorkas says security was a failure in Trump assassination attempt

Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced the construction of a maximum security prison in the Metropolitan Region, in response to the rise in delinquency and organized crime in the country.

“After heading the Pro-Security Cabinet this morning, I announced measures to more forcefully combat delinquency and organized crime in our country, particularly in the Metropolitan Region,” the president wrote on his X account.

Boric said the goal is to reduce homicides, which have been on the rise since 2016, as well as to dismantle organized criminal gangs.

“I have ordered the construction of a new special high and maximum security facility, implementing what the Ministry of Justice has been working on for some time,” Boric said.

According to the president, this will allow effective control of the leaders of organized gangs. This facility will be located in the Metropolitan Region and will cost approximately 90 billion pesos (approximately 96 million dollars).

The president described the construction of this prison as urgent, and said that he will send a bill to Congress to exempt the construction from various procedures and permits.

“I hope to have the cooperation and sense of urgency of Congress in this matter,” he said.

In addition, a task force will be created for the Metropolitan Region, in which the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, Carabineros de Chile, the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) and the Gendarmerie will participate.

The creation of a special force within the Gendarmerie, trained to deal with threats to the order management of maximum security detainees, is also being considered.
