The Minister of Public Health, Luis Medina Ruizwitnessed the presentation of Oscar Hilal, head of the Maternal and Child-Youth Department, on maternal and child mortality and highlighted that the index, for the first time in history in Tucumán, is 8.8 per 1,000.
Medina Ruiz recalled that historically this indicator was usually in double digits “This is due to work at the three levels of care and fundamentally to the work carried out at the first level of care, with the trailers, care in the CAPS, social health agents , obstetrics and with adequate and timely care in second and third level hospitals, the official highlighted.
For her part, the Undersecretary of Health, Cristina Majul, He highlighted what a luxury it is for the Ministry and the province to have this audit committee on maternal and child deaths. “This is an interdisciplinary team that works on statistics, so this group is important for real-time analysis. This is why today we made the presentation in order to make proposals to improve the processes,” he explained.
In this sense, the official maintained that the decrease in deaths in Tucumán after a long time is historic. “We must continue working and I want to thank this committee for the work and effort they made. In addition, it was proposed that the main maternity hospitals have a mortality commission or audit,” Majul stressed.
Meanwhile, Hilal stated that the 2023 data, which are preliminary, were analyzed: “The Ministry established an analysis committee to study maternal and child mortality, so we present everything we have worked on.”
The professional indicated that maternal and child mortality in 2023 is 8.8 per 1,000, which is very significant because it marks a decrease in mortality. “The final values will be in July, but we already have a preliminary value. In terms of maternal mortality, we are also decreasing,” he explained, while highlighting that this result is thanks to the work carried out in the Health System.
“Let’s not forget that we have five safe, family-centered maternity hospitals in the province and we try to ensure that all births are in the same ones. Of the 12,500 births that occurred in the public sector in 2023, only 85 occurred outside of these maternity hospitals,” Hilal concluded.
