Mastung: A giant stone erected in a 600-year-old cemetery

A 600-year-old cemetery is located in Kurdgap Tehsil of Mastung District, about 90 km from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.

The unique thing about this cemetery covering 30 acres is the high stones installed on the graves here.

According to the researchers, these stones were broken from the mountains and brought here with the help of camels.

There are about 1,000 such graves in this cemetery, some of which have headstones 25 to 30 feet high, but each headstone is different.

The stones have been carved in such a way that the identification of these graves is clear.

Various graves have also been carved according to the script of that time, which gives recognition to the ancient culture of these graves.

Amazingly, these tombstones have not been affected by the effects of weather even after the passage of many centuries and they are still installed here in their original condition.

Saifullah Saif Sarpara, a resident of the area, told Independent Urdu that this area has been a confluence of different cultures and civilizations in history.

‘The uniqueness of this cemetery of Kurdgap is the stones installed on the graves, from which we find traces of ancient culture and civilization. Bringing these stones from remote mountains and their special shape and design also shows the skill of the people of that time.’

Saifullah Sarpara said that the government has not paid any attention to this ancient and unique cemetery of Asia, but the local people are working to protect this heritage with their help.

Abdul Razzaq, a researcher from Kurdgap, told Independent Urdu that ‘From history we know that the height of the people buried here was many times higher than the height of the people today.

‘Apart from this, another unique thing is that the camels on which these stones were brought here to this cemetery, they did not have the strength to carry the weight after that and then they were slaughtered in the same cemetery.’

Abdul Raziq added: ‘If the government protects this heritage, our future generations can be exposed to this ancient civilization and culture.’
