Mass eviction in two bars in Plaza Madero in the Historic Center; eight young people reported intoxicated

MEXICO CITY (apro).- At least eight young people, some minors, were intoxicated by alcohol consumption and were evicted along with hundreds more from two clubs located within Plaza Madero, in the heart of the Historic Center of Mexico City, this Friday afternoon; one required transfer to a hospital.

According to television statements by the Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), Myriam Urzúa, between the two places in the plaza located on 20 Madero Street – one on the second and another on the sixth floor; one of them called “Black” -, they were allowed a capacity of a thousand people, but “they exceeded the capacity… there were practically three times as many.”

The official confirmed that the young people treated by paramedics from the Rescue and Medical Emergency Squadron (ERUM) had signs of intoxication due to excessive alcohol intake.

Several of the young people were treated on the sidewalk on Madero pedestrian street and others on Motolinía street. They were given oxygen and serum to recover.

Meanwhile, dozens of police officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) formed a human barrier for the safe exit of the hundreds of young people who attended the clubs. Some left on their own, still with glasses of alcohol in their hands, with their backpacks on their backs and covering their faces with their sweatshirts or jackets. Others had to be helped by their friends to walk.

The head of the SGIRPC reported that personnel from the Administrative Verification Institute (Invea) arrived to review whether the establishments complied with all security and civil protection measures.

The Institute for Administrative Verification (INVEA) proceeded to suspend activities, since during the verification the representatives of the establishment did not show any document proving its legal operation.

He added that young people who could not take out their backpacks and other belongings will be able to pick them up in the coming days at the offices of the Historic Center Authority, located at 8 República de Argentina Street.

Newspaper reports indicate that the concentration of young people from a high school level in the clubs of said square was called by social networks.

The event that occurred this afternoon in the Historic Center brought to mind the tragedy at the News Divine nightclub in the Nueva Atzacoalco neighborhood, Gustavo A. Madero mayor’s office, on June 20, 2008. There, the excess of people and the lack of measures of civil protection caused a stampede that left 12 people dead, nine teenagers and three adults, as well as others injured.
