If Masahiro Sakurai decided to never be actively involved in game development again, we would all be sad, but no one would dare blame him for the decision. He more than deserved to retire. In fact, he came very close to giving up several times during his career due to health issues and chronic shoulder tendonitis, and his YouTube channel seemed like a great epilogue to his career and a great way for everyone to absorb the knowledge of him. But it looks like he might return, and he will in a new Nintendo era.
Sakurai left a message on his YouTube channel wishing him a happy new year and confirming that he will close the channel in 2024. This could mean that the famous creator of the Smash Bros. series is moving on to other things, but logically it could also mean that he is preparing to return to his job as a video game developer. This all comes as Switch 2 announcement rumors gain steam and the announcement of Nintendo’s hybrid successor seems closer than we think.
