In the Turkish automobile and light commercial vehicle total market, in the first 5 months of this year, the share of imported vehicles in sales was 61.79 percent, and the share of vehicles produced in Turkey was 38.20 percent. According to the data compiled by the AA correspondent from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), automobile and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 6 percent in the first five months of the year. Thus, as of the end of May, a total of 471 thousand 743 new vehicles were sold.
While automobile sales increased by 10.25 percent to 375 thousand 97 in the said period, light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 7.9 percent to 96 thousand 646.
DOMESTIC-IMPORTED SALES FIGURES
In the January-May period of this year, domestic production vehicle sales were 146 thousand 727 in a market of 471 thousand 743 units. Imported vehicle sales were determined as 325 thousand 16.
During the said period, the share of domestic production vehicles in sales was 31.11 percent, and the share of imported vehicles was 68.89 percent.
DOMESTIC-IMPORTED DISTRIBUTION IN THE LAST 5 YEARS
Looking at the last 5 years, the share of imported vehicles in sales was higher than the share of vehicles produced in Turkey in the market. According to ODMD data, at the end of last year, the share of domestic production vehicles in total sales was 35.20 percent and the share of imported vehicles was 64.79 percent. While the domestic rate in sales was 43.89 percent in 2021, it decreased to 43.81 at the end of 2022.
In 2020, the share of domestically produced vehicles in total sales was 45.72 percent, and the share of imports was 54.27 percent. In 2019, the share of domestic production was recorded as 43.01 percent and the share of imports was 56.98 percent.
FEATURED BRANDS IN DOMESTIC SALES
Fiat, which sold 58 thousand 212 units in the automobile and light commercial vehicle market in the January-May period, 50 thousand 501 of which were vehicles produced in Turkey, took the lead in the domestic sales rankings in terms of units.
Fiat was followed by Renault, with 38 thousand 285 domestic production out of 53 thousand 708 total sales, and Toyota, with 16 thousand 118 domestic production out of 23 thousand 651 total sales.
Hyundai ranked fourth with 15 thousand 247 domestic sales out of a total sales of 24 thousand 380, and Ford ranked fifth with sales of 14 thousand 727 units out of 37 thousand 313 total sales. Togg’s total sales figure was reported as 11 thousand 288.
BRAND RANKING IN IMPORTED SALES
German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen ranked first in the import sales list with 35 thousand 168 units in the Turkish automotive market in five months.
Following Volkswagen was Chery with 26 thousand 990 sales, Peugeot with 26 thousand 193 sales, Citroen with 24 thousand 28 sales and Ford with 22 thousand 586 sales.
