Mario Zagallo, the only four-time world football champion, has died

Brazil has lost one of its icons in Mario Zagallo. As a player, he became world champion twice together with Pelé, in 1958 and 1962. But perhaps he was even more successful as a coach, because he was also present in 1970 and 1994, when Brazil won the World Cup.

Almost exactly one year after the death of football legend Pelé, Mario Zagallo, the last player of the legendary Brazil team of 1958, has died.

Zagallo was there in 1958 (as a then player of Flamengo) and in 1962 (as a player of Botafogo) when Brazil became world champions twice in a row.

Shortly after the last title, he exchanged his playing career for that of a coach, which would mainly take place in his country.

In 1970, at just 38 years old, he again led Brazil to the world title, but this time as a coach. This made him the first person to become world champion as both a player and coach. Only Franz Beckenbauer and Didier Deschamps would have imitated him.

“The Professor”, a nickname he owes to his great tactical intuition and charisma, returned to Brazil in the 1990s after some wanderings. In 1994 he was Carlos Alberto Parreira’s assistant when the Brazilians became world champions again.

This makes Zagallo the only man to ever become a four-time world champion in football. Until the age of 75, “Velho Lobo” (the old wolf, from his second surname Lobo or “wolf” in Portuguese) remained involved in the Brazilian association.

Zagallo ultimately lived to be 92. He died in Rio de Janeiro after a short illness. The Brazilian Football Federation announces a 7-day mourning period.
