In 2022, marijuana consumption in the United States will surpass alcohol consumption for the first time in 40 years.
Publika.az “Associated Press” reported on this with reference to the results of the research of the American Carnegie Mellon University professor Jonathan Caulkins.
The expert has systematized data from 27 national surveys involving more than 1.6 million people among US residents in 1979-2022. The results revealed that in 2022, 17.7 million Americans used marijuana daily or almost daily, and 14.7 million people used alcohol with the same frequency.
It was reported that this dynamic was observed for the first time 40 years after the beginning of data collection. The agency attributes this to marijuana’s availability for use in most US states.
In the United States, the use of marijuana is prohibited at the federal level, but different states can independently regulate the legislation in this area. Several states and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. In more than 30 additional states, it is not a crime to sell marijuana for medical purposes.
