In a letter to The Wall Street Journal, the opposition leader to Nicolás Maduro expresses her concern for her safety and her life.
Maria Corina Machadoleader of the opposition Venezuelarevealed that he has gone into hiding through a letter addressed to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
Machado accused the president Nicolas Maduro of having lost the presidential election on Sunday. She claims that Edmundo González defeated Maduro by a margin of 67% to 30%. She claims to have copies of the minutes of more than 80% of the polling stations to prove it.

The opposition has published the tally sheets online for verification. Machado claimed that Maduro did not win in any of Venezuela’s 24 states. This, she says, is backed up by four quick counts and two independent exit polls, in addition to the voting records.
Machado’s current situation
Machado stressed that her team is in hiding and that the Brazilian government is protecting her collaborators in the Argentine embassy after the expulsion of seven diplomatic missions. She expressed concern for the safety of her aides, fearing that they could be captured at any moment.
In her letter to the WSJ, Machado stressed the gravity of the situation and the imminent risk to her and her team:
“Following this farce, spontaneous protests broke out, especially in poor parts of Caracas and other cities. Maduro responded with brutal repression. State security forces have killed at least 20 Venezuelans, imprisoned more than 1,000 and forced 11 disappearances. Most of our team is in hiding and, following the expulsion of seven diplomatic missions from Venezuela, my assistants at the Argentine embassy are being protected by the Brazilian government. They could be captured as I write these words.”
