At the age of 54, Marc Wilmots returns to his family nest.
The Schalke 04 club legend will become sporting director of the German second division team – following his playing career and a short spell as interim manager. After his dismissal from coaching at Raja Casablanca in February 2022, this will be a new challenge as an “ultimately responsible sports person”.
The former Red Devils national team coach succeeds Peter Knäbel. Normally he wouldn’t leave until the end of this season, but the collaboration was terminated early by mutual agreement.
Wilmots is welcome in Gelsenkirchen. In 178 matches he achieved success in the UEFA Cup and German Cup. His popularity should get the club back on track.
At Schalke he meets fellow T1 player Karel Geraerts. With 7 out of 9 he has sent the team out of the relegation zone in 14th place for the time being, although the crisis has not yet been completely averted.
