The man who caused a fatal high-speed crash while under the influence on the A59 near Sprang-Capelle last March is appealing. He was sentenced to ten years in prison and TBS for the accident which killed a family in Raamsdonksveer.

His lawyer confirmed this after the complaint Brabant Radio that the man will appeal.

The court ruled that the man, Thomas de G., was guilty of manslaughter. The sentence was higher than what was requested by the Public Prosecutor (OM). He asked for seven years in prison and TBS, because, according to experts, the suspect has a personality disorder.

In December, the court found that a higher prison sentence was appropriate. Due to his ailments and the risk of reoffending, the court also imposed compulsory hospitalization in a closed clinic for G. The court also banned him from driving for ten years.

The suspect from Zevenbergschen Hoek in Brabant and his lawyer Pieter van de Kerkhof believe that the sentence imposed is too high. According to the lawyer, manslaughter has not been proven. According to the court, G. would have accepted the risk of a fatal accident due to his driving behavior. The lawyer disagrees.

The suspect was filmed while driving

According to the public prosecutor, G. had drunk too much on March 10 and was driving at a speed of around 250 kilometers per hour. He said he drank nine to ten beers.

He filmed with his cell phone while driving. Those images were shown at an earlier court hearing.

G. is said to have crashed into the back of a family car at 205km/h when he overtook a lorry. According to his lawyer, De G. braked to avoid the collision. He would have been surprised by the overtaking maneuver. Therefore, according to his lawyer, it was not manslaughter.
