The regulations are designed to prevent clubs from using sponsorship deals with companies affiliated with their owners to increase revenue and spending power, in contravention of Financial Fair Play laws. Man City opposes this law because it violates competition law.
This team asked the Premier League to compensate for financial damages because of alleged losses from sponsorship contracts that were suspended according to regulations.
