The BRICS group of countries initially only contained Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, where the name is an acronym for the members. However, last year, BRICS succeeded in expanding its influence by accepting new members.
Against Western economic domination, BRICS now has new members, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Where more than 40 other countries expressed interest in joining.
“We have made a decision, we will immediately put formal procedures in place… we are just waiting for the final results from the government in South Africa,” Anwar said, according to a video of the interview posted by Guancha at the weekend.
A representative from Anwar’s office on Tuesday (18/6/2024) confirmed the comments as reported by Reuters. However, during the interview, he did not provide further details about the registration process and how far along it was.
Anwar’s remarks came ahead of a three-day visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang this week, as part of celebrations marking 50 years of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China.
Malaysia and China are expected to sign several agreements during Li’s visit, including renewing a five-year trade and economic cooperation agreement.
