A fire broke out in a commercial building on Protonweg in Roosendaal on Saturday afternoon. Most of the fire has been extinguished. The fire brigade will be reduced, but there are still small fires. The A58 is close to the fire and was closed most of the afternoon, but can now be used again. Nobody was injured.
This is a building belonging to ‘t Lekker Plekske, a bread and pastry company. It is not yet known what exactly the building is or what will be stored there.
There are hardware stores and furniture stores nearby that are very busy on Saturdays. Nobody was injured. There was a person in the building who discovered the fire and raised the alarm.
Firefighting activities occasionally produce a lot of extra smoke, firefighters say. As a result, the A58 from Roosendaal to Etten-Leur will remain closed for the time being. The highway will be reopened as soon as possible. Traffic is now being diverted onto the A16 and A17.
The firefighters are still busy removing the sheets of metal with pliers to put out the fire piece by piece. Firefighters could not enter the building because the metal was too hot.
Gigantic column of smoke
According to a 112 correspondent from Omroep Brabant, the fire broke out on one side of the building around two o’clock. Firefighters responded to the scene with “numerous vehicles”. There was a huge amount of smoke that could be seen from a great distance. Measurements were carried out in Zegge and Oudenbosch, but no dangerous substances were found, according to fire chief Eric van Zundert.
An NL warning was sent to the populations of the region, but it was withdrawn. Windows and doors can be opened if smoke is not a nuisance.
‘Difficult to turn off’
“Because the building consisted of several rooms, it was quite difficult to put out the fire and we couldn’t get in,” says Van Zundert. “That’s why we made holes in the path.” Firefighters are putting out the fire through the openings.
