Secretary General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn once emphasized that the most outstanding achievement of this regional organization after 56 years of existence and development is maintaining peace and security, as well as expanding its 10 countries, and soon 11 countries with the admission of Timor-Leste, thereby gathering the entire Southeast Asia region into one community.
Since joining ASEAN in 1995, Vietnam has participated and actively contributed to the journey of regional integration and community building. Every step of ASEAN’s development over the past 28 years has had Vietnam’s mark in it. Vietnam is always devoted to the common home where more than 100 million people belong. In all circumstances, Vietnam is determined to contribute substantially and effectively to the building of the ASEAN Community and affirms the consistent guidelines and unified policy of the Party and State of Vietnam in valuing ASEAN cooperation.
Another highlight marking Vietnam’s steady growth in ASEAN is the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2010. With the theme “Towards the ASEAN Community: From vision to action”, Vietnam has oriented ASEAN to focus on focus on promoting action, emphasizing the “implementation” element to realize the vision of the ASEAN Community, along with the adoption of the Master Plan on ASEAN connectivity. In addition, Vietnam proactively promotes bringing ASEAN’s organizational apparatus into operation and perfecting the legal framework according to the provisions of the Charter.
With the motto “proactive, positive and responsible”, Vietnam participates extensively and comprehensively in ASEAN cooperation in all fields. During the ASEAN year 2020, Vietnam chaired the mid-term review and assessment of the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and approved the orientation for building the ASEAN Community Vision after 2025. This can be considered one of the contributions. the most important and largest of Vietnam as a member of ASEAN.
Vietnam’s proposals and initiatives in ASEAN forums, such as ARF and ADMM+, are supported by ASEAN countries and partners, contributing to strengthening dialogue, building trust and improving the ability to respond to threats. emerging non-traditional security challenges, maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.
