Machu Picchu is the first world wonder with Carbon Neutral certification

Machu Picchu is no longer only considered a historical and cultural destination, but also for its commitment to environmental protection.

He Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchuin its fight for environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change, was decorated as the only one of the seven new wonders of the world with the Carbon Neutral certification. This distinction, initially obtained in September 2021, will be renewed and made official in a special ceremony in the coming weeks.

The Carbon Neutral recognition, granted by Green Initiativeratified the joint efforts between local civil society and the public and private sectors in the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of Machu Picchu. The renewal of this certification has been possible thanks to the work of the Municipality of Machu Picchu Pueblohe grupo Aje and the Inkaterra hotel chain.

In 2015, four waste processing plants were implemented in Machu Picchu, marking a milestone in sustainable waste management and allowing the ecological balance of the area to be maintained.
