Ever since the nominations for Lux Style Awards (LSA) 2022 came out this week, the management of the awards has been criticized by several female musicians including Meesha Shafi.
The LSA management announced the nominations for the television, film and music categories on October 18, but it came as a surprise to many as the list of 82 nominations in the music category did not include any female musicians.
The nominations were released on the LSA website which is currently down for ‘maintenance’.
Speaking to Arab News on Saturday, Meesha Shafi said: ‘I am as shocked and disappointed as any reasonable person should be at the exclusion of women from nominations.’
He added: ‘Our music industry has produced great musicians across genres so these nominations raise questions. Why are only women not being recognized in the awards? Why are they being silenced? What is the justification for this injustice?’
Misha Shafi said she was saddened to see what could only be described as ‘discrimination’.
He said: ‘Perhaps bigotry is now so deeply embedded in society’s subconscious that such injustices continue to surface despite our community voicing its concerns in the past.’
Other Pakistani female musicians have also expressed their dismay at the LSA nominations on their social media accounts, including Zeb Bangash, Momina Mustahsan and Maria Yunira.
The LSA administration denies the allegation of discrimination against women, saying it was not nominations but submissions.
LSA manager Farishta Aslam told Arab News: ‘The list does not reflect any bias or preference towards the platform as it is based on submissions received from the general public via email, portal and phone calls. Is. But we strongly believe that it should be more transparent and democratic.
He said that the nominees will be shortlisted based on these submissions.
But the Lux Style Awards official handle on Instagram has termed the list as ‘nominations’.
The post was removed after a controversy arose as the awards management now claims these are ‘submissions’ and not nominations.
Ferishta Aslam said that TV, film and music celebrities do not submit their profiles but their PR companies, publicists and producers send their names on their behalf.
He asked, ‘Ask Misha if he has submitted his portfolio?’
On the other hand, Misha Shafi described the explanation given by the administration as ‘disappointing’.
He said: ‘The exclusion of female musicians from the nominations belies this reality. It is true that I have not submitted my portfolio due to difficulties and politically incorrect positions in the past, but this matter is bigger than personal issues.’

According to him: ‘I haven’t discussed it at all for myself. I have spoken on behalf of the entire female community. I have done my own research and I personally know artists who are listed without submitting a portfolio as well as artists who have produced excellent work and are not listed in the so-called list. .’
Music duo Talha Anjum and Talha Younis of ‘Young Stunners’ have been nominated in multiple categories as a band and as an individual.
Alina Naghman, CEO of Crimson Artist Management and PR Company, which manages the band, told Arab News: ‘We were asked to send submissions, so we did.’
Speaking to Arab News, Shay Gill, who rose to fame with the song ‘Pasoori’, said that he had not submitted anything but it was disappointing that the LSA management had ‘ignored’ some amazing female artistes.
He told Arab News: ‘I haven’t submitted anything, but that’s also because I’ve just started my artistic journey this year and it’s okay that I’m not part of the list.’
She said: ‘But it’s disappointing that they’ve overlooked such amazing and talented female artists who have been in the industry for so long.’
