The president embarked for the coast for the year-end break on December 26; the return was scheduled for this Wednesday
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has decided to extend his end-of-year vacation on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and postpone his return to Brasilia. He embarked on December 26, 2023 and was scheduled to return this Wednesday (December 3, 2023). He is accompanied by the first lady, Janja da Silva.
Palácio do Planalto has not announced the new date for the PT member’s return. On Wednesday morning Lula posted a photo of himself at sea on social media. “Reuniting with the sea to start 2024 with lots of energy to travel to Brazil”, he wrote in the caption.
Lula is at the Restinga naval base in Marambaia. The site, administered by the Armed Forces, has private beaches with limited access as it is a military zone. It is part of the territory of 3 municipalities of Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí and Mangaratiba. It is about 80 km from the capital Rio de Janeiro.
The naval base is often used by presidents for rest periods. Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) spent Christmas 2018 there, while Michel Temer (MDB) went there for New Year’s Eve from 2016 to 2017 and Carnival 2018.
Lula does not repeat Bahia
Traditionally Lula chooses the Aratu naval base, near Salvador, Bahia, to rest. In 2023 the Carnival took place there, which he used several times to rest in his first 2 terms at the helm of Planalto.
From 2007 to 2010, in his 2nd term, Lula spent 4 consecutive holidays between the end and the beginning of the year in Aratu. There is a house at the naval base where potential visitors stay. Bolsonaro, Temer and Dilma Rousseff (PT) also had the naval base as their destination while holding the Presidency.
During Lula’s trips to Aratu, photojournalists approached Inema Beach, part of the base, by boat. Access to the site is controlled. The approach depended on what presidential security allowed. With telephoto lenses (camera lenses with a long focal length) they recorded Lula’s holiday images.
There were several photos of the PT member in a swimsuit, bathing in the sea. In 2010, Lula was photographed with a Styrofoam box on his head. He was accompanied by Marisa Letícia, who was his wife at the time. Marisa died in 2017.
