President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) made official this Monday (22) the appointment of Ricardo Lewandowski to command the Ministry of Justice from February 1st. The act was published in the “Official Journal of the Union”.

The appointment marks the beginning of the transition to the Ministry of Justice. By 1 February the future Minister of Justice will have to continue with the formation of the new team of the ministry.

“Public security will deserve special attention from the Ministry of Justice under my direction, which should expand intelligence and coordination activities between different police authorities of the Union, States and municipalities for a more effective fight and effective against organized crime,” Lewandowski said.

Lewandowski became STF minister in March 2006. He held the position for 17 years, retiring in April 2023, a month before turning 75, the maximum age for the position.

Ricardo Lewandowski was a judge at the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) and a judge at the State Criminal Court.

As minister of the STF, he presided over the Court between 2014 and 2016. In 2016, as required by the Constitution, he presided in the Senate, as president of the Supreme Court, over the impeachment trial against former president Dilma Rousseff (PT ). .

In addition to the Mercosul Court, in the period following retirement, he joined the Legal Affairs Council of the National Confederation of Industry and coordinated the New Democracy Observatory of the Attorney General’s Office.
