Luis Carlos Reyes took office as the new MinCommerce

Petro stressed that the reactivation of the industry is one of the biggest challenges facing the new Minister of Commerce. “The industry is in the red,” he warned. “This is leading the country to industrialization, destruction of agriculture and specialization of the Colombian economy in three goods that are not positive today: coal, oil and cocaine.”

Luis Carlos Reyes has a solid academic background in Economics and History from Florida International University, as well as a postgraduate and doctorate in Economics from Michigan State University. His experience includes roles as an economist at the Federal Communications Commission during the Barack Obama administration, as well as academic positions at Javeriana University and other institutions.

However, Reyes is not exempt from criticism. During his tenure at Dian, he received numerous criticisms for the low tax collection and the optimistic inclusion of litigation income in the Financial Plan of the Ministry of Finance. Despite these challenges, his experience in public economics and economic development is expected to contribute to addressing the country’s current economic challenges.

With the assumption of Luis Carlos Reyes as Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Gustavo Petro’s government seeks to promote a more diversified economic agenda oriented towards sustainable development, with a focus on the reactivation of the industry and the promotion of tourism as growth engines.
