The modern Rumonge slaughterhouse offers residents the opportunity to consume meat from cows, goats and sheep under strict hygienic conditions, ensuring the absence of diseases. It is well equipped and adapted. However, some challenges exist, including the difficulty of finding cows that often come from remote areas.
Amisi Radjabu, director of the modern abattoir of Rumonge believes that this abattoir will offer several significant advantages, both for the municipality and for the province and the country as a whole.
A new modern slaughterhouse was recently inaugurated on Mutambara hill, in the Gatete area of Rumonge commune and province. This is the second modern slaughterhouse in Burundi and the first in terms of the techniques used. According to Amisi Radjabu, director of the modern slaughterhouse in Rumonge, this establishment ranks among the best, even when compared to those in Burundi’s neighboring countries. Indeed, it is capable of slaughtering ten cows in just 45 minutes. This makes it possible to reach a total of 100 cows or more in a single day, while other slaughterhouses can take much longer to slaughter a single animal.
Thanks to this modern slaughterhouse, the inhabitants of Rumonge can now consume healthy meat, tested and guaranteed to be disease-free, unlike previous practices where slaughtering was often carried out in insufficient sanitary conditions. Radjabu also emphasizes that all work related to the slaughter of livestock is carried out using modern machines, thus ensuring increased hygiene and efficiency.
The animals slaughtered in this slaughterhouse include cows, sheep and goats. The cost of slaughtering a cow is set at 30,000 BIF, while for goats and sheep, this amount is 8,000 BIF. Amisi Radjabu clarified that these rates are temporary and would be revised, depending on the operating costs, such as the consumption of electricity, water and other expenses incurred during this initial phase of operation of this slaughterhouse.
Livestock supply difficulties
Sourcing cattle for slaughter poses considerable challenges. Butchers face real difficulties in finding cows. The latter often come from remote areas such as Matana, Bururi and other localities. When they go to buy ten cows, they only get three or four, making the task all the more complex, says Amisi Radjabu.
For this, it is essential to pay particular attention to cattle and sheep breeding in order to ensure that this modern slaughterhouse can contribute effectively to the economic development of the country.
Would there be any advantages associated with this slaughterhouse?
According to Amisi Radjabu, the modern abattoir in Rumonge will offer several significant benefits, both for the municipality and the province and the country as a whole. This public project, owned by the State, could generate substantial revenues. Due to its proximity to Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), this modern abattoir could also attract customers from these neighboring countries in search of quality meat. Other countries could also turn to this abattoir which is distinguished by its excellence, he adds.
Leonard Niyonsaba, governor of Rumonge province, emphasizes that the income generated by this slaughterhouse will contribute to the economic development of the state. In addition, this modern slaughterhouse will help to significantly reduce waste that was previously omnipresent during slaughterings carried out in uncontrolled conditions. To do this, it is part of an approach aimed at creating a cleaner and waste-free city.
Adequate equipment
Radjabu assures that this slaughterhouse is well equipped and perfectly adapted to its needs. Machines as well as electrical and gas installations are available to compensate for power failures, thus ensuring continuity of work. In addition, a water supply is also guaranteed.
“This equipment will allow us to maintain our operations without interruption. We also have two engineers who have formed a close partnership with the Italian technicians who built the slaughterhouse,” says Radjabu. They have thus acquired the skills necessary to repair the machines in the event of a breakdown, he concludes.
