In the training, around 60 weavers from 22 regencies/cities in East Nusa Tenggara Province were trained to develop natural dyes. “We must love local culture, support local products, by buying local products. And the message from the First Lady (Iriana Joko Widodo) is that if you buy local products, don’t bargain,” said Riri, accompanied by laughter and applause from the audience.
Through natural dyeing, Riri continued, it has participated in preserving the environment, because the materials used come directly from nature. “For example, Village Funds can be used to procure cotton seeds or buy yarn. So Village Funds are not only about building infrastructure, but can also be used in developing superior products, in this case weaving,” said Samsul.
Utilization of natural resources based on the environment is very important to ensure the sustainability of resource availability, by considering the local environmental carrying capacity and carrying capacity, continued Samsul.
Revitalizing the market and production of traditional NTT weaving is one of the aims of this activity. The main objective is to lift the community’s economy by empowering weaving and craft resources, which are filled with local cultural values without having an impact on environmental degradation and can maintain the sustainability of the existing regional environment.
In this activity, the Ministry of Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration through the Directorate General of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration collaborated with Bank NTT, Dekranasda of NTT Province, designer Merdi Sihombing, and Tokopedia. Bank NTT took on the role as one of the venture capitals that can support access to capital. Dekranasda can preserve and develop the cultural heritage of the archipelago through the development and development of arts and crafts to raise the dignity and standard of living of Indonesian craftsmen.
The involvement of designer Merdi Sihombing is expected to transfer his knowledge to the community, especially weavers and weaving motif makers. Meanwhile, Tokopedia is expected to support digital sales of woven products from underdeveloped areas.
Before Boti Village, activities to increase the added value of weaving and crafts with natural dyes had been carried out in Setanggor Village, Central Lombok Regency, Limboro Village, Donggala Regency, and Lahusa Fau Village, South Nias Regency.
“In Lahusa Fau Village, South Nias Regency, which was just held last week, the training focused on kalabubu crafts or coconut shell crafts as additional accessories to support environmentally friendly fashion or eco fashion,” said the Director of Resource and Environmental Development, Dwi Rudi Hartoyo, who is also the Chairperson of the Launching Committee for the Love Ikat Weaving Movement and Cultural Festival.
Wamena Regency, Papua Province is planned as the final location for the implementation of the natural dye value enhancement activity. “We hope to achieve an increase in the capacity of weavers, motif makers, and woven product business people, so that they can reach a wider market by utilizing digital technology in the industrial era 4.0,” continued Rudi.
