Jason Maccani (36) was killed by a police officer on February 3. An investigation was opened to determine whether the force used was appropriate. The police released images of the intervention on Tuesday.

“I remain concerned about the officer’s decision to use deadly force,” Police Chief Michel Moore admitted during a news conference last week.

The footage, taken from a surveillance camera and body cameras worn by police officers, shows the suspect being cornered by seven officers in a city center building. He first raises his hands in the air, then suddenly walks over to confront them.

He was “holding a white object in his right hand,” according to a police news release. Although the object was initially mistaken for a knife, it turned out to be a plastic fork.

The suspect tried to take a gun from a policewoman. One of her colleagues then fired live ammunition, the statement said, after other officers used non-lethal weapons.

The man died of his injuries in hospital.
