Storm Lorena, downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, is located this Friday off the western coast of Baja California Sur, and will continue to cause heavy rains in the northwest and north of Mexico, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
In its most recent report, the agency dependent on the National Water Commission (Conagua) specified that until 03:00 local time (09:00 GMT), the meteorological phenomenon was located 275 kilometers (km) west of Cabo San Lázaro, and 285 km south-southwest of Punta Abreojos, both towns in Baja California Sur.
The SMN indicated that Lorena will cause occasional torrential rains (150 to 250 millimeters [mm]) in Baja California Sur; intense (75 to 150 mm) in southern Baja California and western and southern Sonora.
In addition to very strong (50 to 75 mm) in the north and coast of Sinaloa and Durango, as well as strong (25 to 50 mm) in Chihuahua, although he noted that precipitation will gradually decrease over the course of the day.
He also warned that wind will prevail with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h on the coasts of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and the Gulf of Sinaloa, as well as waves of 2 to 3 meters (m) high on the coasts of Baja California Sur and 1.5 to 2.5 meters high on the coasts of Sonora and Sinaloa.
“Due to its weakening and trajectory, this will be the last warning of the system“said the SMN.
Mexico foresees up to 20 named cyclones in the Mexican Pacific, of which between four and six could be category 3, 4 and even 5.
So far, twelve storms have formed in the Mexican Pacific: Alvin, Bárbara, Cosme, Dalila, Erick, Flossie, Gil, Henriette, Ivo, Juliette, Kiko and Lorena.
The last hurricane recorded in the country was Erick, which made landfall in southern Mexico on June 19 as a category 3 hurricane and caused damage mainly in Oaxaca and Guerrero, causing the death of a minor and various damage to electrical infrastructure, homes and falling trees.
