What causes meningitis?

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitiswhich can live in the throat and, under certain circumstances, become active and trigger the disease quickly, potentially being fatal in less than 48 hours. This infection is transmitted through the air and affects the membranes that cover the brain, causing severe symptoms such as high fever, intense headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, nausea, vomiting and spots on the skin.

In response to the emergency, classes have been suspended at the secondary school and the Putumayo college where the affected students attended. The disease can be prevented with prophylactic antibiotics, so the necessary measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the outbreak.
