Local campaigns begin in Chiapas amid cartel siege

In the midst of the territorial dispute between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, candidates for municipal presidents and local deputies started campaigns yesterday, preceded by kidnappings, homicides and threats to mayors and candidates for elected positions.

At the beginning of the activities, 24 candidates for local electoral districts and 123 for mayors and members of city councils participate.

The current fight waged by the two criminal organizations in the Central, Frailesca, Sierra, Altos, Fronteriza and Selva regions, has caused the disappearance of two candidates to occupy the mayor’s office of Frontera Comalapa, of which, to date, have not yet appeared . The Chiapas Elections Institute reported that according to data from the State Candidacy Registration System, 14,650 people registered for a popular election position. The electoral process will last 30 days, which runs from April 30 to May 29, the organization explained.
