Lister and Rimmer at Comic-Con: Our Kiss Lasted Forever! We sound funnier in Czech

The main representatives of the British series Red Dwarf Craig Charles and Chris Barrie traveled to Prague for the first time ever. At the O2 Universe, they were greeted by thunderous applause in a packed hall. During the one-hour show, the audience was entertained by other excellent jokes of good-natured Brits. When asked by the well-prepared presenter, what connects Great Britain, Japan and the Czech Republic, when Red Dwarf is so popular in these countries, Chriss Barrie quickly replied: “Weirds!”

The actors spared no expense on the set. They recounted how, for example, they would return at 5am from a wild party in Manchester and Kryton actor Robert Llewellyn would go for 5 hours of make-up to meet on set at 10am. Barrie and Charles then went on to describe how Danny John-Jules, who played the Cat, always rehearses hard before shooting a scene. “He screams a lot,” snapped his colleague Craig Charles, and Chris Barrie immediately added: “He comes to Doug (ed. Doug Naylor, creator of the series) and asks him if the Cat could have an entrance like that. Then he takes a long run and shouts and dances along. Doug compliments him and he then spends the next 4 hours screaming trying different variations of his arrival.” Chris Barrie made the audience laugh, imitating the movements of the creature that had evolved from a cat.

Endless kissing

Another highlight of the talk show was the moment when the presenter asked the actors about the fifth part of the 7th episode named Stesk. In it, Lister has a dream of passionately kissing Rimmer. Chris Barrie first claimed that the kiss lasted an eternity, with Charles adding: “I’ve never seen so many people on the set as when we were shooting that kiss,” he joked, and later described the kissing itself: “There were even French kisses with tongues. The whole mouth thing took longer to finally make it to the series.” Craig admitted. Barrie further upgraded the forums: “I wish it would last even longer!”

Both actors also saw for the first time what the legendary Czech dubbing sounds like. The organizers played them a piece in which Lister confides how he lost his temper at the age of 12 on the golf course. “Sounds even funnier than me talking” Charles praised the work of the Czech dubbers. “In Japan they dubbed me in a very deep voice, in Spain they dubbed me in a very high voice and I sound a bit gay. Maybe that’s why men call me there,” Hall laughed, not for the last time.

The actors also received gifts from the guests and organizers. Chris Barrie was moved by a fan’s drawing of him as Rimmer driving a car. Which pleased the old car lover and collector, who asked in surprise, “Did you really draw that?” Charles had previously teased him that he wished the paper had drawn Rimmer sitting on the toilet. When he unwrapped the paper, he realized that he could still hang it on the toilet. Lister, in turn, got a picture of herself at the DJ mixer.
