Hasselt –

Limburg.net’s garden waste bags will have a slightly brighter, grass-greener color. In this way, the waste intermunicipal company wants to optimize the efficiency of the sorting process. “Thanks to this adjustment, we can make manual sorting redundant.”

What exactly is changing?

The green waste bag becomes slightly brighter. Grass green, so to speak, which corresponds to the contents that are allowed in it. There are no changes to these sorting rules. The cost price also remains the same.

Why is the adjustment necessary?

Since 2022, Limburg.net’s garbage trucks have been collecting five different fractions simultaneously in eighteen Limburg municipalities and Diest. In these municipalities, the so-called optimo municipalities, there are bags for household waste (black), PMD (blue), green waste (green), kitchen waste (yellow) and textiles (orange). These bags are then taken together to Bionerga’s sorting facility in Beringen, where they are automatically sorted based on their color.

“We continuously try to optimize that sorting process,” says Hans Roggen, spokesperson for Limburg.net. “Until now, there was still a small margin of error, with green waste bags occasionally ending up in the residual waste. Thanks to the color adjustment, we can make manual sorting of the garden waste fraction unnecessary.”

I still have a stock of old bags. Will they remain usable?

Yes. “Anyone who still has a stock can continue to use it,” says Roggen. “Traders can also continue to sell them. We do ask that you use up the old garden waste bags first. In the long term, the old bags will automatically disappear from the shelves and the streets.”

Green waste bag? Do I put my garden waste in a container?

The way in which your green waste is collected depends on the municipality where you live. Limburg.net uses various methods for collecting garden waste. Only in the Optimo municipalities are bags used for garden waste. Genk and Diepenbeek used to belong to those optimo municipalities, but residents can now choose between a organic waste container or green and yellow waste bags. In the so-called Optimo Light municipalities, PMD and residual waste are collected on the same day in bags and green waste on a different day in a organic waste container. Eight Limburg municipalities, especially in Maasland, have been using containers for organic waste and household waste for years, as well as a blue bag for PMD.
