Limay Blanco visits Changuito, founder of Los Van Van, and organizes a donation to help him

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The comedian and philanthropist Limay Blanco went this Tuesday morning to the home of the percussionist José Luis Quintana Fuentes, known as “Changuito”, a founding musician of the famous Los Van Van orchestra.

With the motivation to help him, Limay went to verify the artist’s living conditions after the musician Giraldo Piloto exposed the precarious situation in which the man lives.

Quintana Fuentes, who lost a leg as a result of gangrene, lives with his daughter in a home that does not even have a refrigerator.

With his only leg and on top of the small bed on which he sleeps, Changuito talked with Limay while continuing to practice the rhythms once learned with his drumsticks.

The son of the former member of Los Van Van, who is also a musician, told the comedian that the situation has not been easy because Changuito’s wife (the young man’s mother) died during the pandemic and a year later the father’s leg was severed.

The young man clarified that he is a musician and demonstrated this by playing in front of Limay, to whom he confessed that he had cried when reading the comments of people who claimed on Facebook that he does not work and lives at the expense of his father and denied, along with his father, that he was an alcoholic. “People talk a lot of nonsense. “I’m not up for that,” said Changuito.

Father and son, who previously lived in another house, in the Guiteras neighborhood, had to sell it when Changuito fell into a hospital.

Limay Blanco, at the end of his visit, in which Changuito gave him a pair of sunglasses that he had saved, asked his followers to contribute to getting the percussionist a refrigerator, a queen pot, a rice cooker, an electric stove, a fan , a door, some food and some furniture.

Changuito, abandoned

The director of the Klimax orchestra, Giraldo Piloto, recently denounced in a live broadcast through his Facebook profile, from the house of Changuito, the situation in which the percussionist, a living legend of Cuban music, finds himself.

One told CubaNet that the musician had fallen into this state despite the fact that “there were not a few who knew about his situation.” He added that Los Van Van have also been concerned about his situation and “they are going to help him.”

In 2022, Yudianis Quintana Gonzaléz, daughter of the famous percussionist, denounced the lack of support for her father from the Cuban Institute of Music and asked for help due to his delicate state of health.

Changuito, born on January 18, 1948 in Casablanca, Havana, was founder of Los Van Van and was in the orchestra for more than 20 years. Along with Formell he was one of the creators of the songo and is considered one of the great percussionists in the history of Cuba.
