Lilo Vilaplana authorizes broadcast of the film in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba.- The renowned filmmaker Lilo Vilaplana and the anti-Castro fighter Reinol Rodríguez authorized the dissemination of the film in Cuba Planteda year after its premiere at the Miami Film Festival.

“Now that Cubans are taking to the streets periodically, well then the movie Planted “It will serve to make them aware of the crimes that the dictatorship commits on the island against peaceful opponents, whom they imprison, torture and humiliate just for asking for freedom,” Vilaplana told CubaNet.

According to the director, all the Cuban people can now see the film and it can spread throughout the island; Only some groups of opponents and activists had been able to view the film clandestinely.

“So that they know there the crimes of the dictatorship, not what they did in ’61, in ’60 or in ’59 itself, no, it is what is happening in Cuba currently. In Cuba there are political prisoners, those communists mistreat political prisoners, the dictatorship has no compassion for political prisoners or political prisoners,” he said.

The feature film is inspired by more than a thousand stories from the first opponents of Fidel Castro’s regime.

Precisely, the premiere of Planted in Cuba was held on October 20, 2023 in Havana, with the participation of some human rights activists, former political prisoners, independent journalists and the writer Ángel Santiesteban, one of the film’s scriptwriters.

Regarding the controversy unleashed with the film Planted, Lilo Vilaplana explained to this medium that after its premiere both his producer, the Spanish-American businessman of Cuban origin Leopoldo Fernández Pujals, and him, wanted it to be seen throughout Cuba and quickly sent it to the Island; In addition, “it was uploaded to YouTube and seen on all channels.”

“The dictatorship, to undermine the work of the film, made fun of us and said that they had leaked it, it was not like that, that’s why with Planted I told them that they were going to see the film when I wanted, not when they said,” Vilaplana said.

For his part, the military affairs coordinator of Alpha 66 Reinol Rodríguez, executive producer of Planted together with Irasema Otero, declared to CubaNet that for him it will be “a tremendous honor that the film can be shown in Cuba.”

“I saw the one of the Planted, who were men, but seeing the women, what they went through in those prisons, you have to be a real man to put up with what they did with the women. And now I feel very proud that they can see it inside Cuba,” he added.

Reinol Rodríguez, 83, was the one who devised the film project Planted and raised the funds for its realization through different exile organizations.

“It was a dream, why if the prisoners had had a movie, the women hadn’t? So I talked about it with my wife, Flori, and she told me, well, you have always done what you wanted, do it. “I met with Lilo and told her that the idea was to make the film for the plantados, so that the legacy remains,” she said.

For the anti-Castro fighter, “this is the best time to show the film,” referring to the context of spontaneous and constant protests in which he finds himself on the Island.

In this regard, he recommended that protesters “not walk scattered through the streets, since they must intertwine so that the police do not penetrate; burn chasers and sabotage the buses that transport the ‘wasps’ (National Special Brigade of the Ministry of the Interior and Prevention Troops of the Revolutionary Armed Forces).”

“It can’t be Bayamo, Matanzas or Havana, it has to be everyone who takes to the streets, at least six million. We are willing to help you in any way we can. The exile is responding, every time something happens there, the exile responds,” Rodríguez finally indicated.
