Lightning strikes seven hikers in Utah

UNITED STATES (AP).-Seven members of a group of young people who were hiking in Utah were taken to hospitals on Thursday after a lightning strike near them.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints youth group in Salina, Utah, was in eastern Sevier County around 1:45 p.m. when light rain began and lightning struck, the official said. Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis said in a statement.

“Approximately 50 young people felt the lightning strike,” Curtis said, adding that seven of them had “medical issues due to the electrocution.”

Two had serious symptoms and were taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Lehi, Utah, while the other five were taken by ambulance to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield and Gunnison Valley Hospital in Gunnison, the police chief added.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to Curtis, who noted that the other hikers returned to their families in Salina, which is 139 miles (223 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.
